Unlike the pieces we collect,  Mukashi of Japan doesn't have such a long history.

Founder, Hamish Pidgeon has been fascinated by Japanese antiques, particularly tansu since the days when he first came to Japan in the late 90's.

The business was born in 2004 with the first shipment of Japanese antiques to his hometown Christchurch in New Zealand.

The next couple of years were devoted to building the all-important business relationships in Japan and securing various chains of supply.

Now a husband and wife team based in the ancient capital of Kyoto, we have warehousing facilities located in central Kyoto allowing us to supply international customers direct from the source as well as providing ample storage space for our antique collections destined for New Zealand each year.

We are able to offer our customers genuine Japanese antiques at very reasonable prices.  We can do this by -

1. Eliminating the middleman. We are part of a privledged few who have direct access to members-only auctions and sales in Japan. We rarely buy from other dealers or wholesalers.

2. Maintaining low overheads. We strive to keep expenses to a minimum by doing most of the work ourselves. This not only makes us accountable for our actions but gives us complete control over the whole process from purchase of stock in Japan to sales internationally and in New Zealand.

3. Understanding our markets. Japan has a unique culture and language that can be frustrating, confusing and costly for those unfamiliar with it. Understanding and respecting the differences has allowed us access to a world closed off to many foreigners.

4. Focusing on practical, functional pieces suitable for everyday use. We choose pieces that have a timeless appeal and have been made with pride, skill and quality materials fit to stand the test of time.

Mukashi of Japan aim to be New Zealand's leading direct importer of traditional Japanese homewares. We continue to develop strong ties with retailers, designers and people in the antique world. By increasing the access to Japanese antiques we can increase the awareness and appreciation for the dedicated craftsmanship, elegance and simple beauty found in mukashi no nihon (Old Japan.)
